From the Sea to the Kitchen

The first fish I've had my hands on all summer

This past June I received one of the coolest birthday gifts ever. Inside a simple envelope was a invitation to a fishing/cooking class. As someone who has been struggling to catch fish and enjoys cooking I couldn’t have been more excited.

The class, hosted by the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE), was part of their Celebrity Chef Series and was comprised of 2 parts.

Part I

In Part I, we chartered a boat with Capt’ Paul aboard Reel Pursuit. We left Charlestown marina at 6pm and within 20 minutes we were fishing. Unlike every time I go out there, the fish were plentiful. I’ve never seen so many stripers breaching the water to feed on bait fish. Despite the fact that our trip was cut short by a storm we returned with more than enough fish for a second part.

Part II

In part II, we gathered at the BCAE kitchens to cook with Chef Jason Bond of Boston Magazine’s Best New Restaurant Bondir. The class was amazing and Chef Bond was great.  We got right to work filleting the fish in preparation for our dishes. We made ceviche, seared striper and a peach shortcake for dessert. Wine and smiles were flowing throughout.

If you’ve never taken a cooking class over at the BCAE…do it. They are fantastic. I can’t recommend them any more highly.
